Nepal Heritage Day
Nepali Heritage Day Celebration. British Columbia has officially proclaimed May 29, 2026, as “Nepali Heritage Day”, recognizing the cultural, social, and community contributions of Nepali Canadians across the province. The proclamation also commemorates the first successful ascent of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, achieved by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal and Sir Edmund Hillary, a milestone that symbolizes courage, resilience, and Himalayan heritage. Key Highlights • Provincial Proclamation: The Government of British Columbia formally declared May 29, 2026, as Nepali Heritage Day to honor the growing Nepali community and its contributions to multiculturalism, service, and community development. • Historical Significance: The date marks the anniversary of the 1953 Everest summit, celebrating the bravery of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and the global recognition of Nepal’s Himalayan identity. • Community Celebrations: The Nepal Cultural Society of British Columbia (NCSBC) will host major community events on May 30, 2026, featuring cultural showcases, community engagement activities, and heritage presentations. • Dignitaries in Attendance: The celebration will welcome high-profile guests, including the Premier of British Columbia as Chief Guest, several MLAs, the Mayor of Surrey, and other diplomatic dignitaries. ________________________________________
